Major Body Parts and their Functions

In this article we’ll discuss only some major parts of human body such as Brain, Teeth, Windpipe, Heart, Lungs, Liver, Stomach, Kidney, Blood Vessels, Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Muscles, and Bones etc.

Brain

Brain is the most important part of body as it controls all the functions of the body. It collects information from different parts of body and decides the type of response to be given.

Teeth

Teeth help in breaking down the food into smaller pieces. Digestion essentially starts by chewing. There are four (04) types of teeth that perform various functions like:

Incisors: Biting and cutting food.

Canines: Piercing and tearing food.

Premolars: Chewing and grinding food.

Molars: Chewing and grinding food.

Windpipe

Windpipe is the gateway of oxygen from mouth/ nose to lungs. The windpipe opens in two (02) lungs.

Heart

The heart is very essential part of our body. It keeps on circulating the blood all over the body through blood vessels. The heart is surrounded by the ribs. The heart works continuously like a pump throughout lifetime. The muscles of the heart contract and relax in order to pump the blood to other parts of the body.

Lungs

From the windpipe the air/ oxygen goes into the lungs. The lungs are also surrounded by ribs. The lungs keep on expanding and contracting for exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between blood and lungs.

Liver

The function of liver in our body is to clean the blood and acids in digestion by secreting bile.

Stomach

Stomach is the major part of digestive tract. It secretes digestive juice. This juice digests the food moved and grind by the muscles of stomach.

Kidney

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs; each kidney is about the size of a fist. Healthy kidneys filter about a half cup of blood in about every minute, removing wastes and extra water from blood to make urine.

Blood Vessels

Blood vessels are a medium by which blood is carried throughout body. They form a closed loop or a circuit, begin and end at your heart. Together, the heart vessels and blood vessels contribute to form blood circulatory system.

Small Intestine

The small intestine is a part of the digestive system. It absorbs nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, proteins and water from the food which will be used by the body. It helps to further digest food coming from the stomach.

The small intestine consists of three (03) parts:

  • Duodenum
  • Jejunum
  • Ileum.

Large Intestine

The function of the Large Intestine is to absorb water and salts from the material that has not been digested as food, and get rid of waste products left over. It’s all one, long tube. The large intestine turns food waste into stool.

Muscles

The muscles are attached to the bones. Being soft, are in pink or red in color. Muscles and bones together help to move hands, arms, feet and legs. Because of this movement we sit, walk run and jump. Muscles help to move blood from heart. Similarly muscles help during breathing from lungs. Muscles help in moving food through digestive system.

Bones

Most of the bones in human body are hard, some are soft. They are of various sizes and shapes. Arms bones are longer than the finger bones. Joints are the places where two or more bones meet. All the bones of body make the frame called skeleton.
