Physical Properties of Metals: Appearance, Texture, Color and Density

There are many objects made of metals such as cooking utensils, spoons and knives etc. Metal is a specific type of matter with following properties:

Appearance of Metals

All the metals are shiny.

Texture of Metals

The metals are solids. Some of them are hard and strong for example Iron, these are used to make various tools and machineries. Some of them are soft for example Gold, Copper and Silver, these are used to make foil, sheets and wires.

Color of Metals

Metals have various colors. Most of the metals are grey in color. Silver is white, Copper is red, Gold is yellow, Chromium and Aluminum are light blue, Tin and Nickel are light pink in color.

Density of Metals

The mass present in a definite volume is called its density.

The metals have more density. If we tap any metal we can hear the resonance of the metal. This is because of its density.

Metals are light (magnesium, aluminum, titanium, etc.) and heavy metals (Zinc, mercury, chromium etc.) on the basis of density. Some metals have magnetic properties and attracted by a magnet.
