ROUNDING NUMBERS

Rounding a number is used to make a number easier to work with.

For example, if there are 496 students in a school, we can say that there are approximately 500 students in the school.

When a number is rounded up or rounded down, it is approximated by eliminating the least significant digits. For example, the number 43 can be rounded down to 40 (rounded to tens place). Similarly, 286 can be rounded up to 300 (rounded to hundreds place). You can see examples below in order to round to tens place:

With the number 468325, the 4 is the most significant digit, because it tells us that the number is 4 hundred thousand and something. It follows that the number 6 is the next most significant digit, and so on and so forth. And, with the number 0.0000056829, the number 5 is the most significant digit, because it tells us that the number is 5 millionths and something. The 6 is the next most significant digit, and so on.
