Mathematicians have developed a shorter method to express very large numbers, called scientific notation. It is based on powers of the base number 10. The number 213,000,000,000 in scientific notation is written as:
2.13×1011Here, the first number before decimal point which is 2 is called the coefficient or the digit term. This first number must be greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10. The other number having power on it is 10, is called the base. It must always be 10 in the scientific notation. The base number 10 is always written in exponent form.
In the number 2.13×1011, the number 11 is called as exponent or power of ten. In order to find exponent, count the number of places from the decimal point to the end of the number.
